Local Spotlight- Second Hand Chic

It's been a while since I've done a Local Spotlight. To check more of them out go here.  This fun  shop is located in the heart of Sugar House. They have something for everyone! From nick knacks, vintage pieces of furniture, linens, jewelery, and clothes. Kelly, the owner, has her store decorated by color, which makes it quit easy to find things!

I just love this coffee table. I think it's so unique. It would be a great conversation or statement piece for sure.

These vintage bowling pins would be the perfect touch to a game room, or a little boys room.

She had such a clever way of displaying her vintage napkins. She used lampshades and pined them to the rim. This way you could see all of the different styles she has. These napkins can easily be turned into pillows for that one of a kind look.

The black boxes are perfect for storage solutions, and I love the numbers painted on.

Be sure to check out Second Hand Chic to find that one of a kind item to add to your home!

Design Board Around Subway Print

After I did the turquoise mood board I haven't been able to stop thinking about the subway art I featured. It's from Z Gallerie and is oh so swanky! I kept thinking about the room that it needs to be in, and decided I should do a mood board for it!

Do-It-Yourself Wine Rack

I've talked about this amazing wine rack before. I think it would be great to be used as a magazine holder. I have wanted it for years now. I like it so much because it's unique, has great lines, and is very interesting to look at. It's something that could stand alone without being used for anything.

Well in the latest issue of Martha Stewart, she had one that she made out of PVC pipes. Hello so ingenious! She did all one size, but it would be so easy to incorporate some smaller sizes. You can bet for sure I will be doing this little DIY.

The supplies she used were sand paper, PVC, velcro to adhere to the shelf and spray paint. The wine rack that I want is $180. This will probably run me under $20. I'd say that's a great savings!

Inspiration From Serena and Lily Revisited

Last week I posted this picture from Serena and Lily, and talked about how much I love the wall and the way it was arranged.  Erika over at Blulabel Bungalow let me know about these great rooms done by the same inspiration picture.

Aren't these rooms great! I especially love how she continued the theme into the closet. Those stripes are so fabulous and add so much character to what could have been a dull closet.

This one is also great. I love the bed spread she used, and how she did the arrangement on the wall. Be sure to check out their blogs to see more pictures.

Quatrefoil Lamp Shade

I only have one lamp in our main room and it was a snooze fest. It's got a pretty big shade that was all white. Really boring. It took me quit a few months to decide exactly what I wanted to do with it, but this weekend I narrowed it down and did it. I used the quatrefoil design. I found a great free template from here. I cut two of them out adhered them with double stick tape and they laid side be side perfectly on my shade. Here is the finished product.

So this is what the template looks like. I used an exacto knife and cut all the black parts out. This took me a while. I first just cut the template out with the size and all, then I measured. I do things backwards because I'm smart like that! I then copied it again and enlarged it by 116%. Cut it out, and decided I needed another one. After that I was a pro with that knife and felt like scissors could be obsolete!. Measure before then cut, like normal people!!

Here's a close up of my shade. I am pretty pleased how it turned out. There are a few little imperfections. My shade's fabric is pretty fuzzy so I didn't get the cleanest lines. Also there is one side that will NEVER see the light of day. It turned out so badly, good thing it's up against the wall.

This was my method of painting. I taped off a border. I had a little lip on the shade that I wanted to keep, so I taped it down. Then I taped around the other two edges so the paint wouldn't bleed onto it.

I covered the sides and inside with painting paper.

Then went to work. TIP: the farther you hold the spray can the BETTER! Seriously don't get too close, that's precisely why one side will never be shown.

I am so happy with how it turned out, even with the ugly crappy side, and the little imperfections of the fuzzy shade. It has taken this lamp from boring to fun!

Ainsley's Art

I found these wall stickers online for a killer price, I paid $4 for four different flowers about 5 years ago. I never really quite new what I was going to do with them until we found out that we were having Ainsley. We don't have a lot of wall space at the moment, and I wanted to create some sort of artwork in her room that was bold. I took one of the flowers and placed it one a canvas that I had painted black. There are a lot of stores on line now where you can purchase stickers like these and adhere them to the wall or create a art piece.

Personalize Your Wall

I love collecting ideas for fun ways to display artwork on walls and bring more personality into a room. This was found in the latest Serena and Lily catalog. There is not one thing boring about this wall. I especially love the painted initial inside a frame. What's great about this is that you can add to it, change it up as the child grows or has different interests. I also think this would look great above a sofa, maybe using thrifted artwork and a last name initial. It would really personalize the space.

My Latest Project

I have the cubed shelf from Ikea, along with 10,859 people in Utah. I also have the white storage bins like the other half of Utah. Bless the heavens that Ikea came, really it is a great source for so many items, but can get a little played out. That's why I needed to do something to these boxes that made them different. Now painting stripes on a box is nothing new, but to me it has made a WORLD of difference. I just took some good old painters tape, and craft paint in Pewter Grey, and am pleased as punch how they turned out.

Don't look too close, there are some smudges. I had a little helper present, and she "forgot" that the paint was wet! It wouldn't be hand done without some mess ups.

I was trying to arrange it differently, because I felt it was a little bottom heavy with all those stripes, so I kept moving things around. I realized if I wanted the frames and accessories played with I would have just given them to Ainsley, so I decided to leave it alone. It will probably be re-arranged in about a week, but for now the boxes are complete.

The Medallion Rug

In Lonny yesterday there was this rug that I just can't stop thinking about. I love how the pattern is subtle, while still making an impact. It's not too busy, but has great contrast.

I found a similar rug from Overstock with a very pleasing price tag.

Here's another alternative to a medallion rug from Target.

I think these rugs are so classic, and would look great with any design scheme you're trying to achieve. I really like how they tie the rooms together in both of these pictures.

Jan/Feb Lonny Magainze!

This issue of Lonny is such a good one! There are so many great homes featured, and fun ideas that I'm stashing away in my inspiration binder. Be sure to check it out here.

This is such a pretty organized space.

Statement Walls

I'm a big fan of patterned statement walls. I especially love them in bedrooms to tie in with the headboard, or to take  the place of a headboard. There are many ways to achieve this look. Stencil, wallpaper, decals, even tape! Here are some "inspiration" pictures that I've collected and would love to do some day.

I love how subtle this wallpaper is, while still making a big impact.

Love the use of patterns in this bedroom.

Here is a great statement wall done with a stencil. I love the femininity it brings to the room, and the contrast of grey and white!
